Best Performing PFAs in Nigeria (2026): Every Pension Fund Administrator Ranked by RSA Fund Returns
Which Pension Fund Administrator is actually growing your retirement savings fastest? That question got harder to answer in 2026: PenCom no longer requires PFAs to publish daily unit prices, so the old habit of comparing prices across PFAs quietly died.
What survived is arguably better. Every PFA must now display a standardized rolling rate of return for each RSA fund on its own website. So we visited the websites of all 19 licensed PFAs in Nigeria and compiled every published figure into one table. No PFA sent us anything; every number below is what each PFA publicly discloses, and each is linked in the sources at the end.
The 2026 PFA League Table
Ranked by Fund II, the default fund where most working Nigerians' savings sit. Figures are the 36-month (3-year) rolling annualized returns displayed on each PFA's website as at July 2026. The best figure in each column is in bold.

† Fidelity's latest published figures are as at June 2026, one month older than the rest. Fund VI figures are the Active (non-retiree) variant. A dash means the PFA does not display that fund's figure.
Reading the table: Leadway PFA leads the default Fund II at 25.79%. CardinalStone Pensions posts the single highest number anywhere on the board, 33.89% on Fund I, and also leads Fund III. NPF Pensions leads the retiree Fund IV at 17.60%, Oak Pensions leads the micro pension Fund V, and Crusader Sterling's 28.80% tops the non-interest Fund VI.
Four PFAs We Did Not Rank (and Why)
Honest comparison requires comparable numbers. Four licensed PFAs publish figures that cannot sit fairly in a 36-month table:
| PFA | What it publishes | Why it is not ranked |
|---|---|---|
| NLPC PFA | Annual returns per calendar year (latest: 2025, e.g. Fund I 19.17%) | Annual figures, not the 36-month rolling measure |
| NUPEMCO | "Rate of Return" as at July 2026 (Fund I 24.89%) | Page does not state the measurement period |
| Citizens Pensions | Returns "based on eleven months of operations" (Fund II 19.68%) | Licensed in 2025; no 3-year track record yet |
| Parthian Pensions | Daily rate-of-return figures (Fund II 20.28% at 25 Aug 2026) | Newly licensed; measurement period not stated |
Know Your Fund Before You Compare
PenCom's multi-fund structure means your money is not in "your PFA's fund"; it is in one specific fund, assigned by age unless you opt otherwise:
- Fund I: aggressive, highest equity allowance. Opt-in only, under 50.
- Fund II: the default for members under 50. This is where most workers are.
- Fund III: conservative, default from age 50 until retirement.
- Fund IV: retirees drawing down their savings.
- Fund V: micro pension for informal sector savers.
- Fund VI: non-interest (ethical/Shari'ah-compliant) fund, active and retiree variants.
Higher-numbered leaders are not "worse managers": Fund IV holds mostly fixed income by design, so its ceiling is lower than Fund I's. Compare PFAs within the same fund, never across funds.
Why Returns Differ So Much
The spread on Fund I runs from about 20% to nearly 34%. Three forces drive the gap:
- Equity exposure. The NGX has had a strong three-year run. PFAs that held more equities within their allowed bands, and picked well, compounded much faster. You can see what that market did on our NGX indices tracker, including the NGX Pension index, which tracks the stocks pension funds favour.
- Fixed income timing. Yields on FGN bonds and treasury bills swung widely; locking in high yields at the right moments separated the leaders from the pack.
- Fund size. Smaller funds can move faster. CardinalStone's chart-topping Fund I figure comes from a smaller asset base than giants like Stanbic IBTC or Access ARM; agility is real, but so is the stabilising weight of scale.
How to Switch PFAs If Yours Is Lagging
The RSA Transfer System lets you move your entire pension savings to another PFA once every year, free of charge:
Open an account with your chosen PFA
Onboarding takes minutes on most PFA apps and websites. You will need your RSA PIN, a valid ID and your BVN.
Submit the transfer request
The receiving PFA initiates the transfer with biometric verification. You do not need permission from your current PFA, and they cannot block it.
Wait for the quarterly window
Transfers are processed in quarterly batches, so your savings and full history move in the next window after approval.
Before you switch: one great year is noise; three-year figures like the table above are signal, and even they are history, not prophecy. Weigh service quality, statements and app experience alongside raw returns.
Methodology
We collected the rate-of-return figures displayed on the official websites of all 19 licensed PFAs on 27 August 2026. The ranked table uses each PFA's published 36-month (3-year) rolling annualized return, the disclosure standard PenCom requires, as at July 2026 (Fidelity: June 2026). Wording varies slightly between PFAs ("36-month compounded rate of return", "3-year rolling average", "3-yr CAGR"); we treat these as the same regulatory measure but link every source so you can verify. PFAs whose published figures use a different or unstated measurement period are listed separately, unranked. This page is refreshed as PFAs update their disclosures; figures are historical performance and do not guarantee future returns.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which PFA is the best in Nigeria overall?
There is no single answer: leadership differs by fund. As at July 2026, Leadway PFA leads Fund II, CardinalStone leads Funds I and III, NPF Pensions leads Fund IV, Oak Pensions leads Fund V and Crusader Sterling leads Fund VI. What matters is the fund your own savings are in.
How many PFAs are in Nigeria now?
Nineteen. Consolidation reshaped the industry: ARM and Access merged into Access ARM Pensions, Tangerine (formerly AXA Mansard) and APT became Tangerine APT, Leadway absorbed PAL Pensions in late 2025, and Radix became CardinalStone Pensions. Citizens and Parthian joined as newly licensed PFAs.
Is a higher return always better?
Within the same fund and the same period, mostly yes, but returns come with volatility. A PFA that tops the chart with an aggressive book can also fall harder in a bad market. The three-year rolling measure smooths some of this, which is exactly why PenCom standardized on it.
Where do pension funds invest my money?
Mostly FGN bonds and treasury bills, plus Nigerian equities within PenCom's limits per fund. Pension funds are the largest institutional investors on the NGX, which is why pension returns and the NGX Pension index tend to move together.
