About Agriculture on the NGX
Agriculture on the NGX is a small but distinctive sector built around a handful of vertically integrated names. Okomu Oil Palm and Presco are the two heavyweight oil palm producers, both of which have benefited from rising domestic palm oil prices and government import restrictions. Livestock Feeds and FTN Cocoa cover poultry and cocoa value chains, while Ellah Lakes is a younger integrated agribusiness play with palm, dairy and grain operations.
The sector is a structural beneficiary of import substitution — government policy has aggressively restricted forex for food imports for over five years — and rising domestic protein and edible-oil consumption. Oil palm in particular has been one of the highest-margin agricultural businesses globally, and Nigerian producers trade at meaningful discounts to international peers. Agriculture is a long-duration thematic position more than a momentum trade.
